Not doing any trekking log since today, can't remember much because of the headache, it seem the sleep is good last night, not sure what has been taken for the breakfast. Packing up slowly in the morning, Mr. Lopes is as fast as usual, then Sushil came in for help. Not feeling that suffer with the headache as yesterday, feeling good to go for EBC! After breakfast, Mr Lopes said he is going down because it is cold and he don't want to trek up any further.... just one last day to EBC, what a waste....
Lobuche is whiteout by the snow on last night, helicopter come this morning, guess there are somebody has a very bad experience last night.
Will gonna trek until the foothill of Nuptse today - Gorak Shep.
The route is wide and gradually going up
Trekkers look tiny under Pumori on the steep slope.
The easy part ended here, will have to trek up and down on the moraine hill after this steep slope. A Korean memorial Chorten below then steep slope.
Chorten for members of Park Young-Seok Expedition, Park Young-Seok is the first person in the world to completed the Adventure Grand Slam, which include the 14 eight-thousander in the world, the highest mountains in each of 7 continents, and both north and south pole. Park Young-Seok disappeared with his team in Annapurna in October 23rd 2011.
"In loving memory of our dear friend
Won-woo NAM (Everest)
December 20th 1965 - May 16th 1993
Jin-sub AN (Everest May 16th 1993 summit)
April 9th 1968 - May 16th 1993
On top of the mountains.
Lay the eyes high up there,
Then, look upon even higher mountains
To foresee the higher world from the mountaintops,
Climbed together, Won-woo NAM, Jin-sub AN
Now, their souls peacefully lie under the Himalaya sky
Young-seok PARK Grand Slam Expedition"
Thought that it will be easy to get to Gorak Shep after this steep slope, but it's not, there are a lots up and down trek in the loose rocks slope.
First sight of Khumbu Glacier, it looks like a still stream of rocks.
One might get stumbled if not paying attention while walking on these moraine. Beside the moraine on the ground, one also has to watch out the loose rocks from above, and the rocks are as big as a watermelon.
Lodges in blue colored roof and be seen, and the hill in brown os Kala Patthar, Kala means "Black" and Patthar means "Rock", it is named after the black rocks found on the hill. Kala Patthar will be the highest point for this trek, it's also the best viewpoint to Peak XV, because Peak XV cannot be seen from EBC and it just merely a little park of the peak can be seen nearby Gorak Shep. It was officially recorded as 5545m height, but others have came to measure it later get 5643m. Some said that 5545m is the spot that people climbed to view Peak XV in the early, but now people climb to the new spot that is much high than the former. As you can seen from here there are 2 route going up to Kala Patthar, the one one the left lead to the lower spot.
Take some rest and lunch in the lodge before heading to EBC, Everest Base Camp. Notice that there is Waiwai noodle soup beside Rara noodle soup on the menu, hence changed to Waiwai and like it pretty much.
Depart for EBC after lunch.
People say that Gorak Shep was an old base camp, then it been moved closed to Khumbu Glacier. There was a lake right on the place I'm standing, but now it is dried.
Trek with a guide that lead a couple, have a little chat with him in Namche, Sushil knew him and told me that he can speak Malay, hence we started to talk in Malay.

Memorial Chorten on the route to EBC, didn't found the Chorten of Rob Hall nor David Sharp's. David Sharp trek alone to summit of Everest, but somehow, he hide himself in a shallow cave beside the route. More than 40 climbers passing by and nobody know that David Sharp is still alive, it was until the next morning, people began to realized that David Sharp is still breathing, but it was to late for rescue. You can find the documentary clips about David Sharp on Youtube.
The icefall can be seen from here, tents beside the icefall are too small, and there are already some group of trekking on EBC. Weather getting worse, and started to snow.
Zoom in with the tele-lens, those at the front are trekkers, and the base camp is right at where the tents were set.
People cheer on the base camp, I just can't wait to get there!
Everest was blocked by its lower peak on its south, hence Everest cannot be seen from EBC. A Korean guy came over and asked "Where is Everest?", then I told him that Everest cannot be seen from the base camp, but after knowing that he trekked alone without guide and porter starting from Jiri, then I think he already knew that Everest can't be seen from the base camp, he just want somebody to help him take a picture on the base camp.
One can see the forming of alpine glacier on EBC, where the snow that accumulated for years start to move when the lower layer of the ice cannot bear the weight at the top, hence it begins to crack and form the crevasse. As the crevasse getting larger and more cracks, then it becomes seracs, the processing of ice moving down called icefall. As the glacier moving further, rocks or hills that blocked the way of the glacier will be destroyed, thus there rocks that falling from the hill as the glacier push it, hence the glacier was covered by he rocks.
Glacier's serac is a dangerous place where lot of people died by falling from it or hit by the serac when it collapse. People believe that the American Jewish lost in EBC, the same person where his Chorten is found on Dhukla pass was kill by the collapsed serac or may be by the Avalanche.
This is view from the right hand side of the place where people are taking picture with, sharp ice blades below of it.
Khumbu Icefall, which is also the route to summit of Everest and Lhotse.
The extreme dangerous place on the Icefall.
Have taken enough picture, return to the lodge before its getting dark.
A glimpse of Peak XV on the way back to Gorak Shep as the clouds moved.
Purposely climb up for this sideboard on the way back, it begins to snow again, very cold....
Spaghetti for dinner, though its not my favorite choice but at least I can finish it tonight.
Flags and underwear from around the world, guys, will you left on of your "flag" here?
